Feb 22: The 2018 CrossFit Open

The CrossFit Open is the first stage of the CrossFit Games season and every year, hundreds of thousands of athletes come together to compete in this worldwide, on-line competition. Anyone aged 14 or older can compete.

This year, the CrossFit Open runs for 5 weeks from February 22 to March 26.

How it all works

Each week, the workout will be released on Friday at 11am via a live stream on YouTube, and it will be the WOD at Milton CrossFit for Friday, Saturday & Monday of that week. To ensure the Open is an all-inclusive event two versions of each workout are offered each week: scaled and Rx’d.

Athletes will complete each workout with a judge (generally Dayn, or another member of Milton CrossFit) who ensures CrossFit movement standards are met and repetitions are counted correctly. Athletes have four days to complete the week’s workout and yes, if you want to try to improve on your score, you can complete the week’s workout more than once!

Each athlete must submit their score by 11am on the Tuesday following the previous week’s workout. Once athletes have submitted their score they can compare their results to others worldwide, regionally, by age or within their own gyms. At the end of the five weeks, the fittest from each region can move on to the next stage of the CrossFit Games season: Regionals!

Upcoming preparation and WODs

Everyone at Milton CrossFit is encouraged to take part in this year’s CrossFit Open, and Dayn will be structuring the upcoming WODs to help you prepare for this fun and challenging event. The WODs will continue to include strength programs for the foundational weightlifting movements (squats, deadlifts, presses and Olympic lifts) but the primary focus will be to improve athlete conditioning.

This will be achieved by repeating some of the previous Open workouts, modifying the Open workouts for different training stimuli, and providing as many combinations of the movements as possible in new workouts over the weeks leading up to the Open.

Registering for the Open

You can register for the CrossFit Open now. All you have to do for now is sign up on the official CrossFit games site and Dayn will start scheduling your WODs to get prepared. Once the Open starts, you’ll be invited to participate in the workout each Friday, Saturday & Monday as a group, and to record your week’s score on the CrossFit site.
